“Liquor ceased to be a luxury; it became a necessity.” Page 5 — There are many words that we can use to describe alcoholism. An obsession. A compulsion. A need. A necessity. Alcohol became as important as food—sometimes more important. Before I’d pay rent, I’d make sure I had enough money for alcohol. Not because I was a bad person, but because alcohol had me imprisoned, enslaved, trapped. Our first step includes an admission of powerlessness. We who are alcoholic are entirely, completely, absolutely powerless to stop drinking and to stay stopped. Some people can stop or moderate their drinking. We can’t.
