“We began to see that the world and its people really dominated us. In that state, the wrong-doing of others, fancied or real, had power to actually kill.” Page 66 — As revealed in The Doctor’s Opinion, we are “restless, irritable, and discontented,” until we can “experience the sense of ease and comfort which comes at once by taking a few drinks.” Were that the end of the story, we’d be fine. We’d get angry, take a few drinks, feel better. No problem. But that’s not the whole story. The rest is that once we take a few drinks we drink more—we set off the compulsion and drink addictively and addictive drinking kills. Hence, our resentments have “power to actually kill.” The solution? Step Four, and the rest of the steps—a daily reprieve from killer resentments.
