“We learned that we had to fully concede to our innermost selves that we were alcoholics. This is the first step in recovery.” Page 30 — This did not come easy for me. Years of denial kept me in self-serving rationalization, beneath which was fear of the surrender of my ineffective self-will to run my life and world. My life was a mess but it was the only life I knew. To make a decision to try something different seemed a risky proposition. In time the misery was too much to bear. I planned my suicide. I found myself instead in A.A. I admitted I was alcoholic. In time, that admission grew deeper. I’m grateful to be “an alcoholic of the hopeless variety.”
