“We usually find a solitary self-appraisal insufficient. Many of us thought it necessary to go much further.” Page 72 — My best thinking was of little use in solving the many problems in my life. I tried for years, both before recovery and during my extended relapse, to improve myself and my lot. But my best thinking resulted in losing my wife, my kids, my business, pretty much everything. Yet still, when faced with Step Five, I thought it wasn’t necessary. I’d faced myself and written my faults and flaws. Now I could fix myself, right? Wrong. How quickly I forgot how many ways I tried on my own to get better. I need the steps as a framework for change and I need the counsel and direction of others.
