“Whatever our protestations, are not most of us concerned with ourselves, our resentments, or our self-pity?” Page 62 — My habitual thought, my default, has always been to think primarily about myself and my needs. I suppose I never really felt safe and cared for, so I overcompensated in my hyper-vigilance and self-absorption. So, in retrospect, it’s obvious that self-care is not the answer, as self-care is only a polite name for self-centeredness. The answer is dependence on God. The answer is fellowship. The answer is service to others. The answer is working and living the actual twelve steps. All of them.
