“When drinking, we were strangers. Sometimes we were so inaccessible that it seemed as though a great wall had been built around us.” Page 107 — As we lived in delusion, denial, fear, and self-centeredness, nothing mattered more than alcohol, chasing the feeling, feeding the craving, the next drink. Nothing mattered more. Not family, not career, not self-care. We were strangers to our loved ones and even to ourselves. We dared not look in the mirror as some small part of us knew the terror we’d feel in the lack of recognition. Step One. Our lives were unmanageable.
