“…the main problem of the alcoholic centers in his mind, rather than in his body. If you ask him why he started on that last bender, the chances are he will offer you any one of a hundred alibis.” Page 23 — Why? We know the pain, the terror, the hell that drinking and using often brings. Sure, it feels great, at first, or at least less bad, feelings numbed, not having to feel, to deal with actual life. But the morning after… the shame, the guilt, the confusion. So, why do we do it? We don’t know. We’re powerless. We’re unable to make sane and rational decisions with respect to alcohol and many other substances and behaviors. But, thankfully, there’s a solution. Twelve steps. A new way of life. Starts with honesty. Once we take an honest look at our disease, we can take some action toward real recovery.
