But not so with the alcoholic illness.” Page 18
“If a person has cancer all are sorry for him and no one is angry or hurt. But not so with the alcoholic illness, for with it there goes annihilation of all the things worth while in life.” Page 18 — I used to feel that difference in every room I walked into. Folks could see cancer or a broken leg and offer help without hesitation. With my drinking it was different—sideways looks, quiet blame, doors closing. The illness didn’t just take my health; it took the simple trust that once connected me to other people.
Recovery didn’t change how the world sees alcoholism overnight. It changed how I stopped waiting for the world to understand before I could start living again. I found a few who had been through the same fire, and together we began putting back the pieces—honesty here, a phone call there, showing up when it would have been easier to hide. The worthwhile things return slowly, but they do return when I keep my side of the street clean.
Help one; save two. Happy Friday!
